BACKGROUND
Julian attended Papatoetoe High School, leaving with
UE in 1965. He embarked on a career at sea as a cadet
with
the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, and also worked
with British Petroleum on oil tanker ships. He completed
his BSc degree in Plymouth, England, and then returned
to New Zealand to work in shipping company management.
This
career had Julian living in Wellington, Sydney and Apia,
before returning to Auckland in 1985.
A
year at training College followed by six years secondary
school teaching gave Julian a good grounding in the education
sector, followed by a couple of years as a consultant before
joining Manukau Institute of Technology at the Maritime
School in 1998.
Julian
has particular responsibility for the shipping business
courses at the maritime school.
