Your maritime career starts here
Welcome to the New Zealand Maritime School. If you are seeking a career at sea as a cadet or ship officer, we offer a wide range of exciting opportunities. Our first rate qualifications in nautical science or marine engineering will take you anywhere in the world and even if you have a passion for the transport or supply industry, and prefer a behind-the-scenes role, your choice to study logistics, shipping and freight can take you there too.
Why study with us
We're one of the top maritime training schools in the Asia Pacific region and we host many students from around the world. We are based on the CBD waterfront in New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland, and we're handy to public transport, and a range of inexpensive accommodation.
All our programmes are in English, so we offer our overseas students the opportunity to brush up their language skills as well as opening the door to the wide range of social and tourism opportunities that New Zealand offers.
Our qualifications are recognised worldwide and our staff are widely experienced. They regularly have a hands-on involvement with the numerous international consulting assignments that the school undertakes and may even be able to introduce you to your future employer.
Go sea maritime qualifications
Our Deck and Engine Officer Cadet programmes are designed to prepare students to become deck officers or marine engineers on foreign going ships, ferries and other seagoing vessels. The Diploma in Nautical Science graduate is expected to become a navigation officer on foreign going cargo ships, tankers and passenger vessels while the graduate of the Diploma in Marine Engineering could be found on cruise or cargo ships and other specialised vessels such as tankers, chemical and gas carriers.
The New Zealand Maritime School is proud to be associated with the Institute of Maritime Education and Training Australasia (IMETA) in providing training for deck and engineering officers with programmes operating in United Arab Emirates, Thailand and India. Students undertake training in schools overseas and on board training vessels before completing their training with an intensive course at the New Zealand Maritime School in Auckland.
The school also run refresher papers for professional seafarers, commercial boat operators and the owners of pleasure boats; and short courses and seminars are designed to improve the quality, education, technical knowledge and skills of personnel in the shipping industry.

Logistics, shipping and freight
Alongside our maritime programmes the NZ Maritime School also offers study in logistics, shipping and freight at our Centre for Logistics. Rapid developments in technology and more open global trade patterns have enabled a wider public awareness of these topics. The status of logisticians has therefore increased significantly worldwide. These developments have led to a higher demand for quality education in the logistics field at all levels.
If you're interested in the operation and optimisation of business processes in the areas of transport, distribution, warehousing and international trade, or in the dispatch, export or import industry but need formal qualifications to go with your outstanding experience, then we invite you to check out our Logistics, Shipping and Freight courses.
